The constellation of drones used to create a giant globe really caught my attention this week. A spectacular light show as part of the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Globes have an aura about them, and to see one in the sky hovering above the stadium as, I’m sure, people were shouting “that’s no moon” was stunning.
The show was designed using 1,824 LED-equipped Intel Shooting Star 3 drones. They weigh just 340 grams, and each drone features real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS for positional accuracy. That’s survey-grade instrumentation, and geometry used to create a spell-binding ooh-aah mappy moment.
It is impressive and as a bonus New Zealand is there!
